AREP, a subsidiary of the French National Railway Group (SNCF), launched an innovative test project called ferrovoltaique (iron PV) on January 17 this year. The project aims to achieve efficient use of clean energy by deploying modular solar panels on idle railways, while ensuring that these tracks remain passable into the future.

The test used a prototype system called SOLVEIG, which consists of a standard shipping container containing eight solar panels. These panels can be quickly deployed and installed on idle rails without the need for foundations and additional construction, giving them the advantage of being instantly deployable, fully reversible and lightweight.

The SOLVEIG system is currently undergoing six months of testing at the Acheres Research Center near the French capital. If all goes well, future iterations of the system are expected to be applied to SNCF's idle lines on a large scale, contributing to the green energy transition.
