On April 8, international energy and environment think tank Ember released its *Global Electricity Review 2025*, revealing that clean electricity accounted for 40.9% of global power generation in 2024—surpassing the 40% threshold for the first time and marking the highest share since the 1940s. This milestone signals a new phase in the global energy transition, with China playing a central role, contributing over half of the world's new clean electricity generation.

The report covers electricity data from 215 countries, including updated 2024 figures from 88 major economies that represent 93% of global electricity demand. In-depth analysis was conducted on seven countries and regions, accounting for 72% of global electricity use. The sharp growth in clean power was primarily driven by renewables—especially solar energy.
Renewable energy saw a major surge, with generation rising by 858 TWh in 2024, 49% higher than the previous record set in 2022. Hydropower remained the largest source of clean electricity at 14.3%, while wind and solar accounted for 8.1% and 6.9%, respectively. For the first time, the combined share of wind and solar surpassed that of hydropower. Nuclear power fell to 9%—its lowest level in 45 years.
Among renewables, solar power continued its rapid ascent, becoming the largest source of new electricity for the third consecutive year and maintaining its status as the fastest-growing source for 20 straight years. In 2024, global solar generation increased by 474 TWh, bringing its total share to 6.9%. Compared to 2022—when the world reached 1 TW of installed solar capacity—this figure doubled to 2 TW in just two years.
China played a pivotal role in this global transition. In 2024, it accounted for 53% of the world’s new solar generation and 58% of new wind generation—surpassing the rest of the world combined. China’s solar share reached 8.3% globally, more than double the level of 2021. Clean energy met 81% of China’s new electricity demand in 2024, well above the five-year average of 52%.
Even amid extreme heatwaves and surging demand, China’s clean energy system demonstrated remarkable resilience. Without such weather anomalies, clean sources could have met 97% of the country’s new demand.
Globally, clean energy helped offset spikes in electricity demand caused by extreme weather. Fossil fuel generation rose only slightly by 1.4%, while clean power covered 96% of demand growth not tied to heatwaves. The report predicts that in the coming years, clean power will outpace demand growth, leading to a steady decline in fossil fuel use worldwide.
